Belka is a fanon robot, similar to a Nandroid, and a supporting character in the ongoing fan story Nandroids in Space. She was created in the Soviet Union and is partnered with Nandroid Bonnie for several space missions.

Character summary[edit source]

Personality[edit source]

Belka, like most Soviet robots, is cool, rational, and loyal, even moreso than Nandroids. She is fluent in both Russian and English, but does have an accent when not speaking her native tongue. She's a natural leader, believing the reason she was chosen for her initial test mission because she was able to take control of a classroom of scared robots after a power outage. She, like Bonnie, also finds herself lacking and has doubts about herself, even if they are unwarranted.[2]

Relationships[edit source]

Belka becomes quick friends with Bonnie, the two finding many similarities with each other.

Belka has a cold relationship with Tatyana, a senior Soviet astronaut. Tatyana does her best to push Belka to her limit in an attempt to make her better.[2]

Plot summary[edit source]

Chapter 10[edit source]

Belka is first introduced in chapter 10 of Nandroids in Space. She is a Soviet robot chosen to take part in a joint effort between eastern and western robotics manufacturers in Tasiilaq, Greenland, looking for new robot astronaut candidates following the loss of two pilots sent on a previous moon mission. Her and Bonnie are delivered, unpowered and not knowing their assignment to Greenland, where they are powered on and given their first mission: assist each other in returning to base camp within 50 hours after being taken to a far off drop point.

The duo are airlifted to the drop zone and after some initial trouble where Belka must help Bonnie with her parachute, the two begin the slow trek back to base camp. As they travel they share stories from their respective training which helps to acquaint the two and pass the time.

Near the end of the first day the two take shelter in a snowdrift against a rocky hill, estimating that they had made it a little over halfway and expecting to be able to finish the mission early. But during the night the snowdrift collapses, burying the two robots. They are able to dig their way out. Their excitement and joy at being free is cut short though as they see a polar bear making it's way to them.

The two run the rest of the way to base camp, not stopping to check if they are being followed. After they relay the story of their trip back to their superiors they are packed away, having completed their mission. The two representatives of each country are happy that the robots have passed their first test, having proved that they work well as a pair independent of human direction.[3]

Chapter 12[edit source]

After passing the previous test, Belka begins hard training for an upcoming moon mission but feels inadequate with her simulation scores, always having trouble at completing simulations at the last second. She's eventually paired with Tatyana, another Soviet robot, to act as an advisory veteran pilot. Despite more training and the addition of Tatyana, Belka's simulation scores stay the same. With her simulation scores being "technically passing" she is cleared for a moon mission to restart a now failed moon base and a secret objective of retrieving a flight recorder of a previous crashed mission.

She has a safe lift off and reunites with Bonnie in space and the two successfully pilot to and land on the moon where they begin cleaning up and jump starting the moon base, known as Unity Base. Belka is able to retrieve the flight recorder, a small red box, and keeps it hidden from Bonnie. Eventually her curiosity grows and one night while Bonnie is recharging Belka attempts to power the device, causing a power surge that fries Bonnie's batteries, rendering her inactive.

Belka travels outside of Unity Base alone and to the bodies of Irina and Kimmy, another joint Soviet-US pair of robots who perished on the moon and is able to retrieve a battery from them and repairs Bonnie.[2]

Trivia[edit source]

  • Belka's top running speed is about 30 km/h (18.6 mi/h).
