Madeline is friends with all of the Hawthorn Grove children and rides the trolley to school with them every day.[1] She also invited them all over to her 8th birthday party. [2]
Madeline is also very close with Emmy, who she enjoys playing and spending time with. After Emmy is sent to Sterling for repairs, Madeline constantly asks when Emmy will come home,[3] and even makes her a get-well-soon card.[4]

Living with Emmy
While working for Sterling, Ted purchased Emmy as a Christmas gift for his family.[5] Emmy helped care for and raise Madeline for four years.[6]
The birthday incident
Emmy, Madeline's Nandroid, suffers a malfunction during Madeline's 8th birthday party and involuntarily sprays down her birthday cake with fire retardant, completely destroying the cake. Her father Ted attempted to stop Emmy, but she sprayed him as well.[7] While initially heartbroken at having her cake destroyed and not being able to make her wish,[8] Madeline still forgives Emmy for the incident[9]

Madeline appears in many chapters, almost always with Emmy by her side. Madeline first appeared in chapter 13 Family Assignments.[10]
