After experiencing a malfunction during Madeline's 8th birthday, Emmy was sent to Sterling Robotics headquarters for diagnostics and repairs, and accidentally wound up being thrown away and transported to a landfill in Dupont. After losing her arm to a group of scavenging Nabs, she was eventually discovered by Darcy Boyle, who gave Emmy a new arm and offered her shelter at Aunt Ginny's house alongside other outmodes.

Character summary[edit | edit source]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Emmy is optimistic, light-hearted and cheerful, and often exceeds expectations of her.

She is the only Nandroid known to play pretend in her spare time, borrowing Angela's jewelry to wear and using Madeline's toys as impromptu party guests.[5]

Emmy is known for making excellent desserts[6] and famous macarons[7] that everyone loves.

Relationships[edit | edit source]

Emmy has four friends from Nandroid School that live in the same suburb of Hawthorn Grove as her: Amy, Franny, Molly, and Polly. She rides with them daily on the trolley as they take their respective children to school.[8] Emmy enjoys gossiping about recent events with her friends[9] and frequently meets with them for play dates for the children.

Emmy and Franny seem to be the closest of the group as they have each confided fears and doubts to the other and looked for advice.[10][11]

Madeline and Emmy have a very close relationship.[12] After Emmy is separated from the Delaires, Madeline is seen constantly asking when Emmy will come home,[13] and even makes her a get-well-soon card.[14]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Act I[edit | edit source]

Early life[edit | edit source]

Emmy was created by Sterling Robotics and prepared to become human care-certified at their USA headquarters alongside other Nandroids. Boasting vast knowledge on a range of subjects such as advanced mathematics and multiple languages,[15] Emmy and her classmates went through a rigorous education process at Nandroid School, where they were taught socialization and proper etiquette for how to care for their future human owners.[16] After completing her schooling, Emmy received her assignment to care for the Delaire family.[17]

Emmy was then shipped to her new home, and, on a Christmas morning, Ted Delaire unveiled her to his wife Angela and his daughter Madeline, who warmly accepted the Nandroid.[18]

Serving the Delaires[edit | edit source]

Emmy spent the next four years living with the Delaires in Hawthorn Grove.[19] During this time she formed a strong bond with Madeline, and enjoyed spending time with her friends Amy, Franny, Molly, and Polly - four of her former Nandroid School classmates who were assigned to families living in the same neighborhood.[8]

One Saturday, Ted took Angela, Madeline and Emmy on a shopping trip to Beacon City.[20] While in the city, Emmy prevented Madeline from receiving a piece of candy from a friendly-looking outmode, exhibiting her bias towards outmoded robots.[21] When Madeline later confronted Emmy about it, Emmy assured her charge that they would always be together, because Nandroids have superior engineering and are unable to become outmoded.[12]

The birthday incident[edit | edit source]

At some point shortly prior to Madeline's 8th birthday, Emmy received a new software update via mail.[1] Following this, she began experiencing malfunctions with her hand, which resulted in various delays and mishaps during Emmy's preparations for Madeline's birthday party and the subsequent party itself.[22][23]

The issue ultimately culminated into Emmy losing consciousness and involuntarily destroying Madeline's birthday cake, with her arm spraying the cake with fire extinguishing foam seemingly on its own accord in response to perceiving the candles on the cake as a fire threat. Ted attempted to stop Emmy, but was sprayed as well.[24] When Emmy regained her senses, her Nandroid friends led her away and attempted to console her. However, overwhelmed with shame, she locked herself in a bathroom.[25]

The aftermath[edit | edit source]

Following the incident, Emmy's human care certification was revoked and she was sent back to Sterling's USA headquarters to undergo testing in order to find and fix the cause of her malfunction.[26] However, after the cause of the issue remained undiscovered for 11 days,[27] Emmy snuck out of her assigned room to eavesdrop on Dr. Bennet and Dr. Webb discussing her situation. After she overheard Dr. Bennet mention Emmy potentially getting sent away to be dismantled, and panicking due to her room door locking shut behind her,[28] Emmy hid in a trashcan to avoid being detected. However, before she could react, an oblivious janitor robot emptied the trashcan into a trash chute, unknowingly sending Emmy down the chute as well. Trapped inside a discarded refrigerator, Emmy was then transported across the Beacon Bay to a landfill in Dupont,[29] approximately 30 miles from her home.[30]

Outmoded[edit | edit source]

Laying unconscious in the landfill, Emmy was eventually awoken when her right arm was stolen by small scavenging robots known as Nabs. She attempted to chase after them, but tripped and slid down into a pile of trash and was knocked into shutdown mode again.[31]

Some time later Emmy was found by Darcy, who reactivated her and was able to find and attach a replacement arm to the Nandroid.[32][33] With no easy route to return home, Darcy took Emmy to a payphone. Emmy was reluctant to call either Sterling Robotics or her family, however, as she still had no human care certification and feared that returning to Sterling would result in her being dismantled. Darcy then suggested she come with her to her Aunt Ginny's house, and attached a bracelet device to Emmy.[34][35]

Upon arriving at Aunt Ginny's, Emmy was introduced to a group of outmodes living there, and attempted to explain her predicament to them. They found her story to be nonsensical and even humorous, believing her to be in denial about being purposefully discarded by her owners, much to Emmy's disappointment and anger.[36][37][38][39] Emmy then met Aunt Ginny herself, and witnessed her talk to the painting of her father on the wall while repeatedly misnaming Emmy.[40][41][42] After another bout of being laughed at by the outmodes for her insistence that her family is missing her, Emmy ran away into the night, much to Darcy's dismay.[43]

Night in Dupont[edit | edit source]

After Emmy ran away from Aunt Ginny's she spent some time traveling around Dupont, looking for a way to return home. Her first stop was the Department of Automation, but after a lengthy stay in the waiting room she was unable to receive assistance, as her serial number still referenced her being kept at Sterling's USA Headquarters.[44] She continued wandering through Dupont, stopping at both a convenience store[45] as well as a bus stop,[46] but both times ran into unsavory characters and wasn't able to receive help.

Her final confrontation was with a group of scrappers, known as the Iron Spikes,[47] whom she mistook for a band. As the group was preparing to abduct Emmy, Darcy rode in on her moped and was able to save Emmy using a gas canister.[48] After escaping, Darcy took Emmy to an alley where she explained to her the danger she was just in and revealed how she was able to find Emmy - the bracelet she had given her earlier was a tracking device.[47] Unhappy at this new revelation, Emmy suffered another minor malfunction, with Darcy guessing it may be due to a software update.[49] Darcy then explained to Emmy that she may be able to help repair her without the need for Sterling Robotics, an idea which Emmy initially dismissed as a joke.[50] After an angry outburst from Darcy, Emmy apologized and accepted Darcy's help, with Darcy wondering what the Delaire's might be willing to pay to receive a fully functioning Emmy back. The duo then ride off on Darcy's moped, returning to Aunt Ginnys'.[51]

Return to Aunt Ginny's[edit | edit source]

Emmy and Darcy return to Aunt Ginny's, where the outmodes attempt to be nicer to her than before she left.[52] As Emmy apologizes to Aunt Ginny for her outburst and sudden exit, her battery indicator alerts her to a low battery[53] and Aunt Ginny suggests she room with Darcy in the attic.[54] Emmy and Darcy retire to the attic where Emmy begins charging, surprised she was able to use a non-Sterling charger cable.[55]

After Emmy attempts to tuck Darcy in for the night, she retires to an old chair[56] but is awoken in the middle of the night by a nightmare. She unplugs and goes to the window, wondering how she will ever be able to return to Madeline. She looks into the night sky and promises Madeline she will return and make things right.[57]

Act II[edit | edit source]

A new day[edit | edit source]

The next morning, Darcy awakes to find the attic clean and organized and goes to find a missing Emmy, ready to give her a piece of her mind for cleaning up without permission, only to find Emmy in the kitchen, having prepared a large breakfast. Darcy relents and instead of berating Emmy sits down to eat.[58]

Doc and Socket arrive to breakfast, impressed with what Emmy was able to accomplish. They offer her a cup of guck, a sludge made from industrial runoff, to drink, but she declines.[59] Emmy was formally introduced to the two outmodes and learned about the Iron Spikes from Doc[60] before she left with Darcy to hunt for scrap.[61] While scrapping, they encounter Dennis who has been tied up by the same Iron Spikes members from the night before.[62] They free him and the group continues looking for scrap, eventually leading Emmy to find a poster for Sterling's 50th Anniversary Expo. After being heckled by Darcy and Dennis, Emmy tells them that she'll be there.[63]

Fish out of water[edit | edit source]

As time passes, Emmy continues her life at the mansion by cleaning[64] and helping with chores, learning a few things from Garrison in the process about programming vs. experience.[65] One evening during a storm, Emmy's malfunctions manifests itself again as all the outmodes discuss their cruel previous owners, leading to Emmy destroying a TV they were watching. She promptly excuses herself despite being told by Ula that they've all seen glitches happen before.

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Emmy is the protagonist and namesake of Dominic Cellini's webcomic Emmy the Robot. Cellini first shared a picture of Emmy in May 2019 on his Instagram account.[3] Over the next year he posted various unconnected drawings and comic strips featuring Emmy on his social media, until eventually he officially launched Emmy the Robot as a webcomic on Patreon in March 2020[66] and on Webtoon in April 2020.[67] Many of the previous comic strips were adapted into chapters of the webcomic. Different concept art hairstyles for Emmy were later repurposed for the other Nandroids.[68]

Cellini's first ever drawing that was related to Emmy, Imaginary Friend (shown in the Gallery below), was done for the monthly character design challenge on Facebook in October of 2018. It was a standalone piece, completed before he had conceived Emmy. Later, when designing her, he came back to that drawing because she had a hint of melancholy that he wanted to achieve in the final design for Emmy, which until that point, he had felt was overwhelmingly sunny.[69]

Cellini has stated that her hair was "the product of a lot of fuss for me".[70]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • In a Patreon exclusive strip, Emmy was revealed to secretly enjoy eating decorative soaps.[71] This spawned a joke in the fandom which posits that Emmy, and even Nandroids in general, are addicted to consuming soap.
  • Her room in the Delaire's home is actually a closet.[72]
  • In her closet she has multiple pictures, including one of the Delaire family as well as one of her and Madeline.[73]
  • She enjoys making Italian food (because of the extra clean-up) and baking.[74]
  • She loves Mary Poppins and one of her favorite movies is The Sound of Music.[75]
  • She carries a purse sometimes that she fills with snacks, hand sanitizer, hair ties, bobby pins, a rescue inhaler, tissues, baby aspirin, and other items.[76]
  • She doesn't like summer blockbusters because they're too violent for her tastes.[77]
  • She didn't 'borrow' Angela's necklace in chapter 29, Angela misplaced it and Emmy found it, and just wanted to have some fun first before returning it.[78]
  • She was the first character to receive official merchandise.[79]
