Sterling Android Nanny
Sterling Android Nannies, or simply Nandroids, are a line of intelligent feminine humanoid robots produced by Sterling Robotics. Primarily created to serve as housemaids and nannies, Nandroids undergo rigorous training to make sure they meet the highest standards of human care. Sterling Nandroids are considered some of the most advanced robots on the market, capable of continuous on-the-job learning, experiencing emotions, and creative thinking.
In fanon, Nandroids are often seen in roles other than maids and nannies.
Physical description[edit | edit source]
Nandroids have the appearance of human-sized ball-jointed dolls, with bodies that are pale porcelain in tone. Their faces are covered with flex rubber synthetic skin[1] and are distinguished by vertical lines above their large optics (eyes) and pink circles on their cheeks, which can glow to simulate blushing.[2] Nandroids have small microphones in place of ears, although they are often hidden behind Nandroids' wigs. All canon Nandroids have blue optics and typically light-colored wigs, although green and other colors of optics, as well as dark colors of hair, are common in fanon.
A typical Nandroid appears slightly shorter than an average human female. Nandroids are advertised as "built to last", and may display strength slightly greater than that of a similarly sized human.[3] They are also waterproof.
Nandroids don't have feet; instead, the ends of their legs look like pointy "stubs". Although these are capable of articulation, Nandroids typically keep them outstretched and walk on tiptoes.
Nandroids are equipped with concealed dispensers in their right arm[4] which can produce pepper spray for self-defense, or fire extinguishing foam in case of fire.[5][6]
A Nandroid's battery can last for up to 48 hours before she needs to recharge.[7] Typically, Nandroids recharge on their docking seat, which is included with them during purchase, during which they go into sleep mode and their memories are backed up onto the hard drive,[8] creating an experience similar to dreaming.[9]
Sterling Authorized Clothing[edit | edit source]
By default, Nandroids wear a light-blue and white standard maid uniform of varying shades that change periodically, are issued a blue purse to hold items, and are instructed to only wear clothes provided by Sterling Robotics and approved by their owners.[10] Instances of owners letting their Nandroids wear unauthorized apparel are common in fanon, however.
The following are known Sterling authorized clothing:
Behavior[edit | edit source]
Nandroids are programmed and taught to be polite, attentive, loyal, and obedient. Before they can be shipped to their assigned families, they undergo a three month period[12] of education and training at Sterling Robotics' so-called Nandroid School, where they are taught various aspects of childcare, housework, cooking, and etiquette, as well as knowledge of mathematics, arts, history, and other subjects. Nandroids are also fluent in over 15 languages, including Morse code and American Sign Language,[13] but don't have any distinct accents.[14]
If a Nandroid successfully passes her courses, she receives her human safety certificate.[15] A malfunctioning Nandroid's certificate is revoked until she is diagnosed and repaired.[16]
Thanks to their advertised "adaptive operating system", Nandroids tend to develop unique personalities and interests over the course of their training and subsequent time spent with their families.
Nandroids are assigned serial numbers, as well as names to make them approachable for humans.[13] All canon Nandroids have names that end with -y.[17] In fanon, names that end with -ie are also common, although many Fandroids have names that don't adhere to the -y/-ie standard.
History[edit | edit source]
Nandroids were created by Sterling Robotics at some point after The Dark Age of Robotics, and at the time were said to be their proudest creation yet.[13] 5 years into Emmy's service, Nandroids were still considered to be relatively new and advanced robots, and Nandroids with performance issues were practically unheard of.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- The cost of a Nandroid is comparable to that of a luxury car, around $80,000 USD (2019) at the minimum.[18]
- On top of being programmed for human care, Nandroids are also programmed with many educational games.[19]
- The original Nandroid concept involved them having pepper spray, tazers, and an emergency alarm, like a car.[20][3]
- Nandroid hair is made from a soft synthetic fiber. Real hair is too impractical, and if animal hair was used, could cause an allergic reaction in some children.[20][21][22]
- Nandroids receive updates as their children age, where they learn how to equip themselves for caring for older kids and adolescents. They retain all previous information, the updates just give them new information and goals.[23]
- Nandroids take about five hours to charge at night.[24] Once they are fully charged they wait until they are needed.[25]
- An owner can change a Nandroids name if they wish,[26][27] but a Nandroid cannot choose her own name.[27]
- Nandroids were designed with noses as a cosmetic choice because they were more desirable to focus groups.[3]
- Nandroids are created with a very traditionalist feel in mind as their buyers tend to prefer and feel safer with female-coded care robots.[28]
- Nandroids are the third generation of Android.[3]
- Treating your Nandroid like a real human is considered a social taboo,[27] as is having a relationship with them.[29]
- Nandroids voices sound like a normal human voice[30][31] due to their high quality,[32] but slightly more "tinny", as if through a speaker.[33][34][31]
- Nandroids don't get humor because they take things too literally.[35]
- Nandroids can detect temperature changes.[36]
- Nandroids are taught a little bit of robot elitism from an early stage in training, but their personalities are less programmed and more adapted over time.[37]
- Nandroids do not have tracking devices for the privacy of their owners[38] and because it wasn't seen as needed.[39]
- Nandroids don't curse,[21][40] but they do use euphemisms, like "Applesauce!"[41]
- Nandroids are short because people felt safer with smaller robots in the house.[42]
- Nandroids are made of relatively lightweight materials making them light by robot standards, but they are still close to the weight of a person.[43]
- In their design blueprints, Nandroids are shown to have a small "heart", which is located under the skin and glows.[44]
- Nandroid eyes are actually screens.[45]
- The majority of the "first wave" of Nandroids have light colored hair.[46]
- Nandroid are taken in to a "bot doc" for periodical checkups, who can tell if they’re being mishandled or in bad shape.[47]
- Nandroids are covered with a soft type of rubber skin.[48][49][50]
- Nandroids are taught how to deliver children as part of "emergency training".[51]
- Nandroids are very quiet and give off little noise when moving so as to appear more human.[52]
- Nandroids are covered in panels that can be removed.[53]
- Nandroids have been conditioned to become competitive and critical,[54] and are very susceptible to peer pressure.[54]
- Nandroids are never allowed to use corporal punishment (spanking/hitting).[55][56]
- An owner may change their Nandroids hairstyle.[57]
- Nandroids do not like being referred to as slaves and it makes them very upset.[58]
- Nandroids don't believe in Santa Claus since they help with preparing for Christmas, but they do keep up the performance that he is real.[59]
- Nandroid uniforms have a pocket on the front of their apron.[60]
- Sterling doesn't produce any male presenting butler robots as part of the Nandroid line.[61][62]
- All Nandroids are right-hand dominant but are also able to be ambidextrous if needed.[63]
Android Etiquette[edit | edit source]
Nandroids are taught many rules in regards to caring for humans. The following are confirmed rules:
- Rule #4: A robotic nanny should look presentable and approachable at all times. She must know how to smile properly as to give the appropriate impression; one that suggests attentiveness, gentility, and enthusiasm.[64]
- Rule #6: Always prioritize the safety of the humans in your care, first. It is your due diligence to report any malfunctions or misconduct on your own behalf, and your fellow androids, if they fail to do so themselves.[65]
- Rule #15: Remember to always greet human guests with enthusiasm and attentiveness.[66]
Although probable, the following have only been mentioned and not specifically stated as rules:
- A nandroid shouldn't sit down during meal service.[67]
