Emmy, officially designated 787-E881,[1] is a Nandroid owned by the Delaire family. She lived with them in their house in Hawthorn Grove for over four years, where she cared for Ted and Angela's daughter, Madeline, and did the daily chores and cooking.
After experiencing a malfunction during Madeline's 8th birthday, Emmy was sent to Sterling Robotics headquarters for diagnostics and repairs, and accidentally wound up being thrown away and transported to a landfill in Dupont. After losing her arm to a group of scavenging Nabs, she was eventually discovered by Darcy Boyle, who gave Emmy a new arm and offered her shelter at Aunt Ginny's house alongside other outmodes.
Character summary
Personality
Emmy is optimistic, light-hearted and cheerful, and often exceeds expectations of her.
She is the only Nandroid to have been shown to play pretend in her spare time, borrowing Angela's jewelry to wear and using Madeline's toys as impromptu party guests.[4]
Emmy is shown to make excellent desserts[5] and famous macarons[6] that everyone loves.
Relationships
Emmy has four friends from Nandroid School that live in the same suburb of Hawthorn Grove as her: Amy, Franny, Molly, and Polly. She rides with them daily on the trolley as they take their respective children to school. Emmy enjoys gossiping about recent events with her friends and frequently meets with them for play dates for the children.
Emmy and Franny seem to be the closest of the group as they have each confided fears and doubts to the other and looked for advice.
Madeline and Emmy have a very close relationship. After Emmy is separated from the Delaires, Madeline is shown constantly asking when Emmy will come home, and even makes her a get-well-soon card.
Plot summary
The comic begins with Emmy explaining about Nandroids and the initial schooling they must all go through to become human-care certified. It's shown that all Nandroids know a range of subjects, like advanced mathematics and multiple languages[7], while in Nandroid School they are taught socialization and proper etiquette for how to care for their future human owners.[8] After completing her schooling, Emmy receives her assignment to care for the Delaire family.[9]
The comic then jumps forward in time four years and chronicles the daily lives of Emmy and her family, along with her friends. During a trip into the city, we see how Emmy's schooling has given her a bias towards outmoded robots, as she keeps Madeline from receiving a piece of candy from a friendly Busker Bot.[10] Emmy is later shown to not be fully aware of her limits as a robot as she tells Madeline about how Nandroids have superior engineering and are unable to become outmoded.[11]
This all leads to an incident during Madeline's eighth birthday party in which Emmy malfunctions. Throughout the day leading up to the party Emmy is shown having multiple malfunctions with her hand[12], causing various delays and mishaps as she prepares for the party. This issue culminates to a full blown fire extinguisher attack on Madeline's birthday cake by Emmy, who sees the fire on her candles as a threat.[13] After destroying the cake Emmy then sprays Ted as well before regaining her senses and looking around at the ruined party. She is taken away by the other Nandroids but is unable to be consoled and locks herself in the bathroom.
After the incident Emmy's human-care certification is revoked and she is sent to a Sterling facility to undergo testing to find and fix the cause of her malfunction.[14] After two weeks there and with no luck diagnosing the issue Emmy eavesdrops on two of the Sterling 'bot docs' discussing her situation and how she may need to be sent away for dismantling if a solution isn't found.[15] After hearing this and with the door to her room having been locked behind her, she hides in a trashcan to avoid being seen by one of the doctors, but this leads her to be sent down a trash chute as another robot empties the trashcan she was in. She is then trapped inside a refrigerator and is transported to a landfill across the bay to Dupont, approximately 30 miles from her home.[16]
After awakening in the landfill, she immediately has her right arm stolen by small scavenging robots known as Nabs. She attempts to chase after them but slides down into a pile of trash and is knocked into shutdown mode again. She is found a short while later by Darcy who reactivates her and is able to find and attach a temporary arm to Emmy. With no easy route to return home, Darcy takes Emmy to a payphone but Emmy is reluctant to call either Sterling or her family as she still has no human care certification and returning to Sterling would result in her apparent dismantling.[17] Darcy then suggests she come with her to her Aunt Ginny's house and attaches a strange bracelet device to Emmy.
Once they arrive at Aunt Ginny's, Emmy is introduced to the outmodes living there. They all find her story and predicament to be nonsensical and even humorous, leading to anger from Emmy. After meeting Aunt Ginny herself, seeing her talk to a painting on the wall,[18] and another bout of being laughed at by the outmodes for her insistence that her family is looking for her, Emmy runs away.
Behind the scenes
Emmy is the protagonist and namesake of Dominic Cellini's webcomic Emmy the Robot. Cellini first shared a picture of Emmy in May 2019 on his Instagram account.[3] Over the next year he posted various unconnected drawings and comic strips featuring Emmy on his social media, until eventually he officially launched Emmy the Robot as a webcomic on Patreon in March 2020[19] and on Webtoon in April 2020.[20] Many of the previous comic strips were adapted into chapters of the webcomic.
Trivia
- In a Patreon exclusive strip, Emmy was revealed to secretly enjoy eating decorative soaps.[21] This spawned a joke in the fandom which posits that Emmy, and even Nandroids in general, are addicted to consuming soap.
